Be informed of (Receiving): The Gopel of John

Unit 1
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. John 1:10-11
What two groups failed to receive Christ? (vv. 10-11)
  • The world (Mankind): The world did not recognize him
  • The Jewish Nation: He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him
Why?

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.
John 3:19-21

Lineage:
The Jewish Nation- He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I HAVE EVEN SENT TO YOU ALL MY SERVANTS the prophets, DAILY rising up early and sending them. Jeremiah 7:25

Refers to "the DAILY ministry of the prophets"

?) The word "daily," what does this WORD bring to mind?

A) If anyone desires to come after Me, Let him deny himself, and take up his cross DAILY, and follow me. Luke 9:23
Jesus denied Himself... "Not My will, but Yours, be done." Luke 22:42

The cost of following Jesus

You're a witness.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The word witness means "martyr."

For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” Acts 9:16

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live (in the flesh), I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

"Even as the Son of Man came NOT to be served but TO SERVE, and TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM for many.” Mt. 20:28

(My own Paraphrase) and the life which I now live (Even as the Son of Man), NOT to be served but TO SERVE, I live by faith in the Son of God (it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me), who loved me, TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM and gave Himself for me.
John the Baptist:
This man came for a WITNESS...
Now this is the TESTIMONY of John...
"Are you a prophet?" And he answered "NO."
(This man came for a WITNESS)

"it is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me (HE MUST INCREASE), whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose (I MUST DECREASE)."

"And I (we) have seen (witness) and  testified (testimony) that this is the son of God." John 1:7, 19, 21, 27, 29, 34, 3:30

"Behold! The Lamb of God (The ultimate sacrifice) who takes away the sin of the world (atonement/propitiation)!"

The Lamb of God (Ex. 12:1-36; Is. 53:7; Ex. 29:38-42; Num. 28:1-8; cf. Heb. 10:5-7)

Unit 2
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- John 1:12

What does it mean to "receive" Christ? (v. 12)

As many as received Him, to those who believe in His name:
As many as received, who received? Those.
Those who? Those who believe.
Believe in what? His name.

To them He gave (gift of grace) the right to become children of God. If children, then heirs- heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. These are sons of God, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God, led by the spirit of God.

To them, who's them?
Those who believe in His name.
Those who believe in His name, He gave what? Salvation.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

To them (Those who believe in His name), He gave the right, what right?
The right to become children of God (He made you ALIVE, who were DEAD in trespasses and sins), The right, the title of "God's children." You received the Spirit of Adoption.

You can not earn it, it's a gift.

(My own Paraphrase)
And you He made ALIVE, who were DEAD in trespasses and sins.
We know that we are of God. The spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

Satan using the power of death is subject to God's will (Job 2:6).

The whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

You are (were) of your father the devil, the Prince of the power of the air (The Spirit), who works in the sons (by nature children of wrath), of disobedience and the desires of your father you want (wanted) to do. We all once conducted ourselves (just as the others), in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind (which you once walked, to the course of this world).
He was a murderer FROM THE BEGINNING, and does not STAND in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a LIAR and THE FATHER of it.
He who says, "I know Him (God)," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. If we say that we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and His word is not in us.

...For a hypocrite cannot come before him (God). Job 13:16

Those who are perishing (whose minds the god of this age has blinded), because they (those who are perishing), are not of God, therefore they (you) do not (did not) hear. And we know that the son of God has come and has given us an understanding,  that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
John 1:13; 8:44, 47; Romans 8:14-17; 2nd Corinthians 4:3-4; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 John 1:10; 2:4; 5:19, 20

What is the result?
The New Birth

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again  he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:1-6

Born Again (A new nature):

"...unless one is born AGAIN, he cannot see the Kingdom of God."
Do not marvel that I said to you, 'YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN.' 3:3, 7

Lit. "again" or "from above."

Born of Water & The Spirit:
"Cleansing"
Unless one is born of WATER (Ezekiel 36:25) and THE SPIRIT (Ezekiel 36:26-27) he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. (5)

WATER/cleansing (Ezekiel 36:24-27)

When water is used figuratively in the OT, refers to "Renewal" or "spiritual cleansing"
  • Law of purification Numbers 19:17-19
Ps. 51:10 Create in me a CLEAN heart, O God, And RENEW a steadfast spirit within me.

Isaiah 32:15 "Until THE SPIRIT is poured upon us from on high..."

For I will pour water on him who is thirsty... I will pour my Spirit... (44:3)
  • An invitation to abundant Life:
Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. ...Without money and without price. (55:1-3 cf. Revelation 3:17-18)

Jeremiah 2:13 For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water. (cf. 2 Peter 2:17)
  • God's Spirit poured out Joel 2:28-29
Jesus made reference to the Spiritual washing or purification of the soul, accomplished by the Holy Spirit, through the word of God, at the moment of Salvation (required for belonging to his kingdom).

Ephesians 5:26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word
Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit

Flesh/Spirit 3:6-8

"That which is born of the flesh is flesh (blood) and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (of God). (6)

Do not marvel that I said to you, 'YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN.' (7) (A new nature)

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (8)

The wind blows where it wishes Jesus' point was that just as the wind cannot be controlled or understood by human beings but it's work can be witnessed so also it is with the Holy Spirit. He cannot be controlled or understood. But the proof of his work is apparent. Where the spirit works there is undeniable and unmistakable evidence.
